What Is Needed to Shop for a Medicare Supplement?

Eligibility for Medicare Supplement insurance requires a few basic things:

  • Enrollment into Original Medicare Parts A & B - you must first sign up for A&B before a supplement can be put into force
  • Continued payment of your Medicare Part B premiums (usually deducted from your social security check)
  • An open enrollment or guaranteed issue window, or the ability to pass medical health underwriting

Open enrollment for medicare supplements is the 6-month period beginning on the first day of the month in which you enrolled in Medicare Part B. If you are on Medicare under age 65, you will also have a 6-month open enrollment period when you reach age 65. During this open enrollment windo, you can enroll in any medicare supplement without health underwriting - you cannot be turned down for coverage.

Guaranteed Issue for medicare supplements is similar to open enrollment, but is usually a shorter period - about a two window - during which someone with a special circumstance can enroll in a medicare supplement without health underwriting. The most common circumstance is the loss of employer group health coverage.

If you don't have open enrollment or guaranteed issue status, then working with one of our independent Medicare insurance agents can greatly help you. We are experts in the health underwriting guidelines for various insurance companies, and these can vary quite a bit from one company to the next.

Why Do Medicare Supplement prices vary so much between insurance companies?

While Medicare supplements are standardized by the federal government so that the basic benefits for each plan letter are the same among carriers, the insurance company still get to set their own rates. Some carriers offer better pricing than others for various reasons - loss ratios, financial stability, rate trend history and many other factors. We can assist you with getting the facts about each carrier before you choose the medicare supplement that best suits you.
